Available stock is what is saleable on hand, less what is reserved. Quarantine and in-transit stock are excluded, and availability never goes negative. A backorder is demand, not a negative number.
How the store stays honest.
- A ledger, not a field
- Receipts, issues, returns, transfers and adjustments are immutable movements, each linked to its source record.
- Blind counts
- Counts run blind, with the scope locked or movements reconciled after cut-off. The counter cannot approve their own write-off.
- Every issue has a reason
- Each part issued has a recipient and either a billing line or an authorised internal use. Unbilled issues appear in a daily exception list.
- Receiving in pieces
- Receiving five of ten leaves five open. Over-receipt above tolerance needs approval.
- Returns that go where they belong
- A defective return goes to quarantine, not to saleable stock, and its refund is a separate controlled transaction.
- Supersession with care
- A supersession link is directional. It never quietly declares an alternative compatible with every earlier fitment.
